5 Ways To Boost Confidence in the Gym

Having confidence in the gym can be tricky if it’s been awhile since you’ve worked out regularly, are just starting out on a new program, or you usually work out with someone else. But, we know you can do it! Here are some easy tips to consider to give you the boost you need to “own” your next gym sesh!

  1. HAVE A PLAN

Have your workout written down on paper or on your phone. You want to look confident knowing exactly where you are headed and what you are doing. Looking around aimlessly will cost you time or confusion on what to do next.

  1. KNOW YOUR EXERCISES

Pre-research and watch demo videos on exercises to make sure you perform them properly! No worse feeling then walking to your station or picking up your weight and not knowing how to perform the exercise. If your plan involves using a machine and you are unsure of how to use it, ask a gym associate! I’m on my 6th year of weight training and even now there are times where I’ll approach a machine and have to think twice about how to use it. Don’t let this make you feel embarrassed and cause you to walk away.

  1. BE PROACTIVE AND ADAPTIVE

It won’t kill you to move on to your next exercise if a machine is taken. Rest time between sets should be kept to a minimum, so circle back around when the machine is available. Standing around to wait will cut your time short and prevent you from completing your workout.

  1. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Keep a log with rep ranges/ weights. Visually seeing strength gains is an instant booster. This will give you a sense of accomplishment leaving you feeling and looking stronger. Logging will also help motivate to push yourself during workouts and make you look forward to doing them. Double whammy!…Drives motivation and boosts confidence!

  1. GET IN THE ZONE

Prepare yourself mentally before stepping foot in the gym. This is your time! Don’t let others distract you from your workout. This time should be focused on yourself, not what anyone else around you is doing. I’m always sure to wear my headphones as this helps keep me zoned-in and focused. Choosing the right play list gets me amped and motivated to bust out my reps!
